An important festival celebrated at all Lord Ayyapa temples around the world is Makara Vilaku. It is a seven-day festival, beginning on the day of Makara Sankranti, the day when the sun is in summer solstice.
Makara Vilakku is a celestial star that is worshiped as a part of ritual in the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple in the day of Makara Sankranti (Winter solstice). Sabarimala Makara Jyothi is a natural light that appears three times at the time of Deeparadhana on the eastern horizon at Ponnambalamedu hills.
Makara Vilakku celebrations are held annually at the Sri Vairavimada Kaliamman Temple in Toa Payoh. Highlights of the celebrations in Singapore include Mandala Pooja, Padi Pooja, and Makara Vilakku Panchakaala Pooja.
