THEEMITHI (FIRE WALKING) FESTIVAL 2024
The annual Theemithi (Fire Walking) Festival is a significant religious event for Hindus in Singapore. It is a three-month-long festival with several pre-events and ceremonies that culminate on 20 October 2024. The festival takes place at Singapore’s oldest Hindu temple, the Sri Mariamman Temple on South Bridge Road.
The festival has a long history and has been part of Hindu life in Singapore for more than 150 years. It was introduced by those who came to work here for the British colonial establishments. Most of these workers hailed from the state of Tamil Nadu in Southern India. The event is part of the folklore of the Indian epic Mahabharata, The festival honours Goddess Sri Drowpathai Amman, a main character in the epic and one of the principal deities at Sri Mariamman Temple. The Fire Walking Festival symbolizes the completion of her vow at the end of the great war depicted in the epic.
The festival starts on Monday, 5 August 2024 with Kodiyetram (festival flag hoisting). Theemithi (Fire Walking) will be held on Sunday, 20 October 2024, and post-event ceremonies will conclude on Thursday, 24 October 2024.
