Prayer for Peace
Om sarve bhavantu sukhinaha
Sarve santu niraamayaah
Sarve bhadraani pashyantu
Maa kaschit dukkha bhaag bhavet
Om shaanti shaanti shaanti
Meaning:
May all be happy. May all be free from disabilities. May all see the good of others. May none be in misery. Om, peace, peace, peace.
Brief Explanation:
Our great sages and saints believed that the only prayer worth uttering was the prayer for the good of all – that is, a prayer for others rather than just ourselves. This concept finds its most beautiful expression in this hymn.
‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ (The world is one family) is a great truth proclaimed by the ancient scriptures of India. Our sages had a truly global vision long before globalisation became a buzz word. When we attain this awareness and enter this realm of light, we will no longer dwell on differences and disharmony; we will begin to bear witness to the truth of God’s infinite power, mercy and wisdom.
This hymn prays for the health and well-being of all creation – let none feel the affliction of pain and suffering. This is the true spirit of maitri, daya, compassion.
